February 18th was a special day at the Cathedral Outdoor Hockey League (OHL) rink. The team held a mini outdoor tournament in conjunction with Hockey Day in Canada, as well as a ribbon cutting and official unveiling of their new player’s benches.

The benches, explained head coach Pete Joyce, were a necessity for Cathedral because without them they didn’t have proper facilities to play outdoor games – something a little odd for an outdoor hockey league.

“The OHL has always been a community based hockey program that has achieved its successes through community involvement,” she explained. “It has been through the efforts of individuals like the coaches at Cathedral going the extra mile that has allowed the league to grow into what it is today.”

“It is our hope moving forward to take some of this momentum and use it toward bettering other rinks and continuing to grow the OHL in the community as a whole. We want players in all nine of our locations to have access to the same opportunities, and this was a great step in that direction.”

In true community spirit, the outdoor winter classic tournament and celebration was very well attended, with dignitaries, MP Erin Weir, MLA Carla Beck, Regina ward 3 councillor Andrew Stevens, on hand to give comments and lend their support.
