Another basketball season has come and gone!
This season we had 297 kids register for the Ehrlo Basketball program. We ran it at five locations: Dr Ferguson, Harbour Landing, Coronation Park, Arcola and mamaweyatitan centre. We had so many participants we had to add a second location in the Dr Ferguson area, across the street at St Catherine School!
We also added mini-ball this year which had over 40 kids ages 6-7 attend practice at the mamaweyatitan centre every Monday – this group was a great additional to the program! Their energy and eagerness was a weekly reminder of the importance of our programs in the community and the vital role early intervention and mitigation risk play by engaging with some of the younger kids in our community.
As part of our funding from Jumpstart we were able to provide 42 players with brand new shoes thanks to Jumpstart and Sport Chek. This is an important role we can play for families in our programs, as a pair of runners not only allows access to our basketball program but is one of the most important pieces of equipment as it allows kids to be active in a variety of activities in the community and within their schools. It is also a cost that for many of our families can place a burden on an already tight household budget. We did have 89 requests, so were not able to meet the full need but are grateful to have been able to have helped the families we were.
Our basketball league is unique because we have three former participants who now coach, as well as a group of older kids who came out to either help coach our younger age groups or referee at the tournament.
Our leagues help not only foster and promote basketball skills but also leadership and community involvement.
The fun isn’t over yet, though!
