On Feb. 6th, the Regina Pats will take on the Prince George Cougars at the Brandt Centre. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. This game is of special significance to Sport Venture for two reasons – they’ll be hosting an equipment drive and three OHL teams will take the ice at both intermissions.
“We started the equipment drive initiative last year. Knowing that the Pats are the face of hockey in Regina, it seemed like a great way to raise awareness for the OHL and what we do,” explained Amanda McConnell, manager of Ehrlo Sport Venture.
Last year’s drive went over very well, collecting an entire trailer full of sticks, pads, helmets, and skates for Sport Venture’s “Dress a Champion” program. Everyone who attends the game this year is encouraged to bring a piece or two of gently used equipment.
Allowing some of the OHL players the opportunity to play on the ice of the Western Hockey League is special all on its own.
“Many of our players look up to the Pats players as role models,” Amanda said.
For many of the youth, some who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, skating on the same ice as WHL-calibre players is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity.
Come on down and support the OHL – cheer on our own, and bring some of that outgrown equipment that’s been laying around the basement for too long!
