Ehrlo Sport Venture Library recently partnered with the Regina Open Door Society to run a four-day, multi sport camp for youth ages 13-18. The idea behind the camp was to give the youth, who are new to Canada, a chance to try a variety of sports they may not have had the opportunity to in the past.

As Sport Venture is so well-known for our OHL, and Canada for its hockey greats, we started day one with hockey at Gocki Park. Day two was spent at the Rugby club learning rugby and beach volleyball. On the third day, participants visited Central Park for kickball and football. On the final day, youth headed to the outdoor courts at Sheldon Collegiate to try their hand at basketball, hosted by Elite Basketball.

Regina Firefighters and Regina Police Service showed up during the four day event and helped make the camp special by taking time out of their day to interact with the youth and teach them about bike safety.

The success of the camps was due to many volunteers from the community and within the agency.

basketball“The event was really only possible because of the help of Ranch Ehrlo staff,” commented Amanda McConnell, Sport Venture manager. “It’s amazing how many different talents and connections you can find when you start talking to people from all areas of the agency!”

Among those that took part were unit manager Shayne Logan who helped set up the Rugby event, as did Damon Weigl, a personal support worker. Gary Bresch an education assistant and a member of the summer work crew did the football portion of the camp. The manager of Ranch Ehrlo's Community Vocational and Education Program, Brad Endicott and his daughter Brynn, also helped out.

Amanda added, “Sport Venture staff Ojay Stein, Filipe Dos-Santos, and Vanessa Krieser also really stepped up and helped make this camp possible.”
