Supporting a loved one who’s struggling with their mental health can be challenging, and knowing how to help can feel overwhelming.

Our team at Ehrlo Counselling Services (ECS) has shared a few tips to help guide and support you as you provide compassionate care to those in your life.

“It can be hard when someone you love is going through a difficult time, so it’s essential to remember to take care of yourself too,” said Taylor Schwickrath, clinical social worker.  “It’s important to recognize that it is not your responsibility to fix everything or make it better.”

People in crisis aren’t often looking for a solution, but rather someone who can listen and validate their feelings, she added.

“If you’re trying to help a loved one going through a tough time, you don’t need to have all the answers. Simply offering a supportive, listening ear can make a world of difference.”

It’s important to acknowledge that some struggles may be too difficult or too close to the heart for us to manage alone. In such cases, seeking support from a counsellor or mental health professional can provide valuable guidance.

If you or someone you care about is in need of assistance, we encourage you to contact us at ECS.

It’s never too late to seek help – we’re here for you.
