Ranch Ehrlo Society continues to produce and publish its Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) education series, playing a key role in deepening the foundational knowledge of Indigenous culture.
The education series, initiated in January 2021, was initially developed to support the agency’s commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and is reflective of the agency’s Indigenous Engagement Guide, enhancing staff cultural competency. The newsletter provides readers an opportunity to further understand Indigenous culture, ways of knowing, and traditions, while championing learning from an alternative worldview.
“The newsletter fosters connections and meaningful conversations around Indigenous culture,” explained Jamie Lerat, Indigenous advisor and member of the TRC committee. “It provides a shared learning experience for staff and participants alike. This creates opportunities for everyone to learn together, building cultural understanding within the agency.”
The education series guides readers in reconciliation exploration through three essential aspects: the foundational "bones" of reconciliation, which focus on treaty education and legislation; the intellectual understanding, supported by the Touchstones of Hope and the Four Seasons of Reconciliation; and learning with our hearts, through ceremony, story, art, and music.
The newsletter serves as a vital resource for people on their truth and reconciliation journeys, offering a spectrum of information. Newsletter content centres around the solstice and equinox cycles which mark important times of reflection, renewal, and balance. These seasonal changes, which hold deep cultural importance, are used as a guide when sharing about ceremonies, teachings, and resources. The series also spotlights the incredible people and programs that are building bridges and making connections and showcases community events that bring people of all nations together.
The TRC education series is one of the many ways the agency is supporting staff engagement and enhancing cultural competency. Employees and stakeholders are encouraged to explore additional educational and immersive cultural experiences to broaden their knowledge and perspectives in support of the Indigenous Engagement Guide.
