The Monday Night Football program scored big on Thursday afternoon, receiving a major donation from Loblaw Companies Limited.
The food retailer contributed $5,000 to the Ehrlo Sport Venture Monday Night Football program, allowing more kids to play the game.
“These types of donations are key to continuing our programs,” said Laura Logan, Ehrlo Sport Venture manager. “Without the funding, these programs become at risk of being lost.”
Extra Foods store manager Amber Crawford made the presentation Thursday afternoon, on behalf of Loblaw. She said the monies come from the Loblaw after-school grant, one of several initiatives that support the company’s focus on supporting healthy active lifestyles for children and youth.
“Loblaw believes it is important to address the growing concerns around childhood health and obesity,” said Crawford. “Being active in communities at the local, regional, and national levels is important to us.”
The $5,000 donation will be used to fund a variety of program initiatives and activities including transportation to and from major events, field rentals (Credit Union EventPlex), food for the final tournament, awards, and equipment, said Logan.
“Football is a popular sport within our community but costs have increased significantly and registrations fill up quickly,” said Logan. “We bring football to these athletes in their community, eliminate fees, and never turn anyone away.”
The Monday Night Football is a non-contact football league that operates for seven weeks from late August until the beginning of October. Approximately 200 youth are involved in this league, operating from six city schools and recreational areas. The co-ed league is divided into two age groups: 8-12 years of age and 13-18 years of age.
The 2013 Monday Night Football kick-off will be held on Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at Mosaic Stadium.
