Ranch Ehrlo Society, along with the Government of Canada, Province of Saskatchewan, and city of Regina, celebrated the official opening of Chaz Court, a new housing development for youth in transition.
The Honourable Donna Harpauer Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation; along with Canada Mortgage and Housing General Manager Fatima Barros, city of Regina Councillor Shawn Fraser, and Ranch Ehrlo Society made the announcement today.
Chaz Court is a pocket suite apartment building located at 1747 Montreal St., in Regina’s heritage neighbourhood. The project features eight 200 square-foot single occupancy suites designed for young singles transitioning from care to independent living.
“Ranch Ehrlo Society is proud to have partnered with the Government of Canada, the Province of Saskatchewan, and the City of Regina to make this housing development become a realization,” said Malcolm Neill, vice-president of residential services. “Chaz Court will be a great home to young people as they move toward greater independence and into their early years of adulthood.”
Tenants living at Chaz Court are currently between the ages of 16 and 25 years old, and are attending school with plans to complete their Grade 12 education.
The Ehrlo Housing team provides the Chaz Court tenants with property management services, tenant relations, and opportunities to learn new skills related to independent living. Tenants also have support persons in place to assist them with the transition to independent living as a coordinated effort to ensure the best outcomes possible for these young adults.
“Living at Chaz Court has been an awesome experience; it has been different but it has been easy to transition to this type of pocket-suite living,” said Delvin Moosewah, Chaz Court tenant and part-time caretaker. “I really enjoy living here; it’s perfect for what I need in my life.”
The project broke ground on May 13, 2013 and tenants began moving in on April 1, 2014. Chaz Court is named in honour of Dale Chastkiewicz, who was a board member on the Ranch Ehrlo Society and the former Ehrlo Community Services for a total of eight years and continues to support its work in the community.
"I'm honoured that our family name is on the project and I hope there are many more of these type of buildings to come. It's great for the community," Dale stated at the event.
The total cost of the development is approximately $933,000. The Government of Canada, through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the Province of Saskatchewan, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) provided a combined total of $768,000. The City of Regina contributed $80,000 through a municipal grant, with Ranch Ehrlo Society providing the funding balance of approximately $85,000 through cash and land equity.
