Regina youth are providing the public with a snapshot of their perspective on community health.
Local youth have captured their depictions of urban health and well-being through a new Photovoice project and exhibition. The “Our View: Perspectives on Health and Well-being” exhibit is a pictorial documentation of youth perspectives on the issues, strengths, and possible solutions to improve the health of their community.
Equipped with a camera, participating youth were allotted the opportunity to act as researchers through a community-based method which involved the processes of identifying, representing, and enhancing their community through photography.
The photo exhibition opened on Wednesday, October 24, at the Dunlop Art Gallery at the Regina Public Library. The four-week exhibit was introduced by youth Photovoice participants acting as the Master of Ceremonies, and was opened by Mayor Michael Fougere and supporting dignitaries.
A number of partners provided support to the project, including Ranch Ehrlo’s Paper Crane Community Arts Centre, Regina Qu’Appelle Health Regina, City of Regina, Common Wealth Community Arts, Dunlop Art Gallery, and the Regina Public Library.
Paper Crane Community Arts Centre manager Amanda Scandrett facilitated workshops at the Cathedral Neighbourhood Center.
“This project provided a wonderful opportunity to partner with community organizations,” Amanda commented. “As Paper Crane grows, we look forward to extending our programs here to reach a wider scope of the community. This project was a powerful way to see those intentions take place on a deeper level.”
