running back drillsThe Ehrlo Monday Night Football program kicked off its season on Wednesday, September 4th at Mosaic stadium.

League volunteers, Regina Thunder and Saskatchewan Roughriders' players including Kory Sheets, Drew Willy, Eddie Russ, Ricky Schmitt, Taj Smith, and Brian Peters were on hand to lend some expertise to the inner-city youth learning to play the game.

Regina Thunder player Nik Whalen commented, “The Thunder has a strong belief in community involvement and we wanted to come here to support the kids and hopefully teach them some skills.”

Saskatchewan Roughrider Eddie Russ added, “Growing up I was in similar circumstances to these kids. We never had this kind of opportunity and wanted someone to give back to us. You never know what this could do – I hope we inspire some of the kids. I know I’m getting inspired hearing their stories and seeing their will and drive.”

The Monday Night Football is a free non-contact football league that operates for seven weeks from late August until the beginning of October. Approximately 200 youth are involved in this league, operating from six city schools and recreational areas with volunteer coaches. The co-ed league is divided into two age groups: 8-12 years of age and 13-18 years of age. The season will end with a final tournament at the Credit Union EventPlex.

The league got a boost this year with a $5,000 donation from Loblaws Extra Foods.

“These types of donations are key to continuing our programs,” said Laura Logan, Ehrlo Sport Venture manager. “Without the funding, these programs become at risk of being lost.”Eddie Russ

Football is a popular sport but costs have increased significantly and registrations fill up quickly. The MNF league allows any athlete the ability to play in their community regardless of their financial circumstances.

Rick Kullman, Sport Venture volunteer explained why the kickoffs are so important to the kids. “Kids who are less fortunate and can’t afford to play team sport can come here and see the Prairie Thunders and Roughriders. They are going to look back in 10 years and remember being at Taylor field.”

“Growing up with sports is huge to keep kids on track and focused,” he added.

Youth are welcome to attend any Monday Night Football league. For more information contact (306) 751-2411 or email sportventure@ranchehrlo.ca.
