Kids in the 2015 Ehrlo Outdoor Hockey League (OHL) are itching to hit the ice and start the season.
For many youth, this year will mark the first that they play for the OHL – a free league that makes it possible for hundreds of kids to play recreational hockey in Regina.
“We always get lots of positive feedback from anyone that has an opportunity to be involved with the OHL,” said Amanda McConnell, manager of Ehrlo Sport Venture. “Most are beyond grateful that they, or their children, have the opportunity to play because they otherwise would not be able to.”
An Atom group has been arranged for players eight to 12 years old, while players age 13 to 18 will play Bantam. The OHL has expanded by one additional rink this season, giving players ice time at nine rinks within the city of Regina.
Sport Venture staff said the growth is a sign of things to come.
“As the cost of indoor ice times continues to increase, we’re seeing a number of people who can no longer afford the steep fees,” Amanda explained. “I imagine we’ll continue to see our numbers increase annually.”
“Hockey is a huge part of the Canadian identity but unfortunately it’s also one of the most expensive sports costing thousands of dollars per year,” she continued. “That, combined with the commitment of time, makes it a very difficult sport for families to get involved in.”
Last year more than 300 boys and girls played in the OHL, thanks in part to the league’s “Dress a Champion” program. The program further supports Sport Venture’s goal to provide access to recreation programs by reducing the barriers to participation in sport and physical activity. Dress a Champion allows each OHL player to be fitted with the necessary equipment (including helmet, gloves, and skates) at no charge.
“This year we are on track to a stellar year with the Dress a Champion program,” said Amanda. “We’re on our way to dress over 250 kids and are seeing record numbers at Grassick rink, with 66 players already dressed.”
The 22nd season of the OHL will start the week of Jan.5th and will run to March 8th (ice conditions considering).
Sport Venture is always recruiting coaches and volunteers as it takes a great number of dedicated people to keep a league of this capacity growing and running smoothly.
