Neighbourhood children had the opportunity to leave their mark on Ehrlo Sport Venture.
Community members joined staff on Monday, June 1st, to beautify the building with a mosaic mural.
“We were always trying to give directions to our building because we didn’t have a sign, so we thought a cost effective solution would be to paint a mural ourselves,” explained Amanda McConnell, manager of Ehrlo Sport Venture. “The mural will help people better locate us and help tie us in to the culture of the community by complementing murals throughout the neighbourhood.”
The mural was sketched by practicum student Jessica Hoffort, and painted by a handful of volunteers from the community.
"The purpose of the mural was to make it for the community - by the community, " said Jessica. "We had a good turn out and I think the finished product turned out great."
The mural was the latest improvement made to the design of Ehrlo Sport Venture, explained recreation worker Kelsey Bachinski.
“Last summer talks began to make the building more user-friendly and appealing to those in the community. As such, the rental gear was reorganized to make the lending library more accessible for borrowers and we began brainstorming an exterior mural to create a stronger identity.”
“The mural will help people understand what we’re all about, and it gives us an identity apart from being that ‘green building’ sitting on North Central’s 5th Avenue.”
Sport Venture is located at 2730 5th Avenue, in the heart of Regina’s North Central neighbourhood. The community centre offers free sports leagues and an equipment lending library to provide inner-city youth and families with access to recreation programs by reducing financial barriers.
