A few years ago I made the move from a big city to a small town. While the transition took a toll on my lifestyle (like late night shopping and drive-thru suppers) it also changed the way that I see the world.
Living in a small town has given me a grandiose appreciation for the lessons that I’ve learned, some that I think everyone could benefit from:
- 1. Be friendly.
In a small town everyone waves at one another, whether it’s a familiar face or one you haven’t seen before. Say hello, make eye contact, and maybe even stir up some conversation.
- Stop and smell the roses.
Those living in a small town know what it’s like to be stopped on Main Street because the driver ahead has stopped to chat. There are no beeping horns, only patient idles. Slow down. Take time to really see, hear, and feel your surroundings. Life doesn’t have to be a mad dash to the finish line.
- Work together and anything is possible.
The small town that I live in held a community fundraiser to rebuild the decrepit swimming pool. In one night of live auction the community raised more than $89,000! When we work together – with our friends, families, neighbours and communities we can accomplish more. There truly is power in numbers.
- If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
Living in a small town, you quickly learn that news travels faster on coffee row than it does through any newspaper or social media site. Don’t repeat gossip. Don’t talk poorly about people. And don’t always believe what you hear.
- Go out of your way to help someone.
In a small town, it’s not uncommon to see a Good Samaritan carry groceries or a heavy parcel for someone who needs the help. Do good for others, and they will do good for you.
- It’s not about where you are; it’s about who you are with.
Whether you’re in a shopping mall or in the middle of a bush it’s the company that matters most. If you’re alone, you need to learn to like yourself.
- Be proud of who you are and what you do.
Prior to moving to the rural town I was advised by one of the locals, “the good thing about a small town is that everybody knows you. The bad thing about a small town is that everybody knows you.” There is no privacy in this world, whether you live in a big city or a small town. Everyone has a way of knowing everything, so make sure all that you say and do is a true reflection of you.
