Two new specialized groups were launched by Ranch Ehrlo late last year in efforts to provide youth with additional opportunities to build skills, competence, and self-esteem.

The specialized groups began with two pilot projects – the Get N-Ergized hip hop group and a Grief and Loss group.

Both groups were well-received by participating youth. The Grief and Loss group, facilitated by Dave Wiebe and Jenna Hesse, recently wrapped up after a six week run.

“The intent was to help the youth cope with multiple losses they have experienced,” Dave explained. “A lot of the youth at Ranch Ehrlo have experienced so many losses, including loss of family, home, friends, and a sense of safety, culture and community. These, in addition to the passing of loved ones.”

The facilitators wanted to focus on the individual losses of each member. As a final exercise, the participants were given the opportunity to write messages on paper butterflies (either to loved ones or messages about things they wished they could let go of) which were attached to balloons and released into the air.

“It was a moving experience, and one they all seemed to have appreciated,” said Dave. “The group was difficult for the youth at times, but they all stuck with it, and Jenna and I are grateful for the courage they all showed.”

Specialized groups are designed to fill gaps in programming, and create new opportunities for youth to address their needs and reasons for service.
