A unique Ranch program is fostering success and providing support with collaborative workshops for reunification of families, foster parents, and children.
The Treatment Foster Care Program recently held one of three annual workshops for program participants.
The fall workshop, held on Oct. 10th, concentrated on the issue of safety, with a particular emphasis on fire safety and first aid.
“The safety workshop was designed to teach kids basic skills that they could use to keep themselves and their siblings safe,” said senior program manager Lisa Neill. “It’s important that the kids know what to do in the case of an emergency, especially if they are home alone.”
The workshops serve a twofold purpose, said Lisa, providing reunification and foster families with the opportunity to learn and to build supportive relationships with one another.
“I think the workshops are great,” said Angela Montano, foster parent of two young girls. “I enjoy being able to talk to the other foster parents who understand and can relate to my experiences. I find that support really helpful.”
There is always support and ongoing training with the Treatment Foster Care Program, said Angela.
“I know that I can always get a hold of somebody and that makes such a difference. When we do need support, or respite, it’s there,” she explained. “The training and support that comes from the Ranch provides us with skills and knowledge about how to deal with difficult situations.”
The seasonal workshops are in addition to the Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) and Parental Resources Information Development and Education (PRIDE) training and in-home consultations that foster families receive from Ranch Ehrlo Society.
All caregivers are provided with essential training, clinical and consultative support, and respite services including 24/7 on-call services.
“When you first start out you may not feel like you have much knowledge, but over time the support and ongoing training really builds your skills,” said Angela. “Even if you don’t have all the answers, the staff give you all the support.”
