The Outdoor Hockey League (OHL) is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. To mark this milestone, a celebration was held on December 7, 2012 at the Core Ritchie Centre in Regina. The event featured volunteer recognition, speeches by the Dress-A-Champion and OHL founder, Russ Matthews, and Don Morris, president of RBC Regina, an equipment donation from the Phoenician Elves of the Phoenix Group, and of course a shinny game! A visual display featured a timeline, photo collage, and jerseys outlining the history of the OHL.

In his speech, Matthews explained, “The whole idea behind the Outdoor Hockey League is to empower the community to take ownership. We wanted to bring the park alive in the community and have it as a hub for people to network. We like to say that when you give a kid a hockey stick you aren’t giving him a hand out you are giving him a tool to make him stronger physically and cognitively. You are building his pride, giving his family something to bond over, and you are making the community stronger.”

From its humble beginnings in a Regina classroom to a league which is now spread across Saskatchewan to Saskatoon and Prince Albert, the OHL allows all youth the opportunity to play hockey by removing the financial barriers. Througout the 20th season, there will be weekly stories highlighting OHL volunteers, former players, and media coverage over the past 20 years on the agency web site. Be sure to check the public web site weekly for new content, which will be featured in our "What's New" section.
