P1040997 Imagine a place to call your own after bumping around from household to household, or feeling like you don’t quite belong in the places you’ve been.

For seven residents, Chaz Court brings new meaning to the word belonging and new feeling to the expression of home.

“Tsuitehis is home for me,” 27-year-old Alex* boasted with pride. “I like it because it’s mine, and I think it’s great.”

Alex moved into one of the eight pocket suite apartments on June 2, after transitioning from a Ranch Ehrlo group home.

While Alex continues to receive support and mentorship from the Ranch and community resources, he says the transition to independent living has proved to be difficult.

“I have trouble sleeping at night because I get lonely,” he said. “I’ve been in care since I was five years old, so I’m trying to figure out what to do with my days.”

Despite the learning curve, Alex said he’s blessed to have his own apartment.

“By far this has been the best experience,” he said. “I’m thankful this place opened. I’ve been waiting a long time to get my own apartment and I’m really happy to have it.”

“It was so exciting to move here,” 17-year-old Jonathan*, a fellow neighbour, agreed. “But it does get lonely sometimes.”

Jonathan moved into Chaz Court at the beginning of June. As a Grade 11 student, Jonathan is one of few peers to live independently. P1040993

“I really like this place,” he said perched upon his bed. “I like having a home of my own, and it’s much better than my old place.”

Jonathan previously lived with family but the arrangements were less than ideal with tension brewing in the home.

With continued dialogue and support from family, the transition has been a smooth one for Jonathan.

What used to be chores have become daily routines as he learns how to cook, clean, budget, and grocery shop.

“There are pros and cons, but I’m really glad I found this place,” he said. “I like it. It’s cozy, warm, and it’s starting to feel like home.”
