A renewed focus on professional development is transforming the Ehrlo Early Learning Centre (EELC).
In September 2024, EELC introduced a new initiative requiring all staff to achieve a minimum Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Level 3 certification, reflecting Ranch Ehrlo’s commitment to childcare excellence.
To support this initiative, the Government of Saskatchewan’s ECE Wage Enhancement Grant provides a wage top-up of up to $8.50 per hour for certified educators, further encouraging professional growth.
“While many educators are skilled without formal training, having the theoretical knowledge behind their work allows staff to better understand how their efforts impact child development,” explained Karin Duff, director of EELC.
Pinky Kalita, an early childhood educator, said despite her initial nerves, she found the experience rewarding.
“Going back to school after 15 years was intimidating, "she explained. “I was worried about balancing everything, but taking that step was an incredibly rewarding milestone with valuable professional and personal benefits.”
For current staff, EELC offers full support in achieving their ECE 3 certification, with no set deadline for completion. We will cover tuition costs upfront, provide time off for studying and assignments, and ensure a flexible pace—educators are only required to take two classes per year.
“We wanted to make it as easy as possible,” said Karin.
EELC requires all new hires to have an ECE Level 3 certification before joining the team, ensuring that staff are ready to meet the high standards of childcare excellence from day one.
The impact has been profound, with staff showing a renewed sense of pride and purpose.
"I've gained so much confidence, not just as an educator but as a mother, and I'm proud of how far I've come," exclaimed Glennise Handoc, early childhood educator.
EELC is well on its way to achieving full ECE Level 3 certification, with 12 educators currently enrolled and many pursuing micro-credentials and advanced courses driven by a renewed passion for continuous learning.
