For over a decade now, W. F. Ready School Ehrlo Early Learning Centre (EELC) has been putting on an annual bake sale to benefit the Z99 radiothon for neonatal intensive care with contributions from Imperial and Ruth Pawson schools. They sell cookies, cupcakes, brownies, and popcorn for three days before the radiothon begins. This year, both Gladys McDonald and Wilfrid Walker joined in the fundraising efforts.

Gladys McDonald modelled their event after W.F. Ready’s, with children and educators baking at least once a week for the past month. The sale was held on March 16th and 17th.

“The children always ask why we’re baking and having the sale, and the educators have the discussion with them about babies that are born and need some extra care before coming home,” explained Gladys McDonald program supervisor Audra Hammer.

Wilfrid Walker held a lemonade stand to raise funds. On March 10th and 11th, children helped make lemonade and then manned the stand, set up in the hallway of the school. They helped to both pour the lemonade and take the customer’s money.

“Hearing the children explain to their parents that we’re helping the sick babies is something they can be proud of,” Audra added. “They can know they made a difference for a family.”

EELC students and staff personally delivered the cheque, worth $3,158.80, to the radiothon on March 18th.
